Walks-The Mersey Way-Hale Head-Liverpool.

Starting the walk from St Mary’s Church, I firstly had a wander around the graveyard, visited the Childe of Hale and then had a look for some early dog violets. No violets but I did see a Pheasant and a marsh horsetail.

I used to visit the shore and the lighthouse as a kid, I remember the walk down to it was a portal of green hedges that I couldn’t see over filled with sparrows and the rumble of planes going over.

Walking on this day back in April, I still cannot see over the green hedges and the rumble of planes is still very much there.

It is a very good lighthouse as lighthouses go and a good walk to it from the village. I always wanted to live there, which I would blame thanks to watching too many episodes of Round the Twist.

The route around the shoreline is part of the Mersey Way, which is a 22-mile trail which runs from Rixton near Warrington to Garston. It is just a very odd but beautiful place. I can’t describe it really as you have to be there yourself. You can either walk along the shore and round past the lighthouse on the sandstone ridges or continue to walk along the top path to the right that will take you on to Garston.

After disturbing a very big nest of red ants and making them extremely cross, it was time to go home.

Points to remember- if you walk on the beach and keep going further and further out to the river, you will sink. The Mersey is fast and unforgiving so just watch it nice instead. It is very windy at times so take a hat. The lighthouse is somebody’s house so don’t be shouting or trying to knock on to use the facilities-there aren’t any.

Don’t disturb the strandline detritus looking for things if you can help it as 10,000 angry red ants up your leg isn’t a good day out.
