Beaches-Crosby-Blitz Beach-Liverpool.

Back in April, I finally decided to carry on driving past all of the signs for Anthony Gormley’s Another Place and see what happens. After lots of years ending up at Crosby or Formby beaches, the bit in the middle past the lifeboat station, I’ve kind of forgotten about. Mainly because I always parked in the wrong car park.

Known as the Blitz beach, it is one of those places that you mean to visit but only if you are up there.

The majority is WW2 bomb rubble but there is also quite a bit of later 60’s, 70’s landfill which is what I was looking for. It is a bit overwhelming at first as it is a sea of terracotta but looking closely you can see the names of the brick makers, old bottles, marbles, a Sqezy washing up liquid bottle from the 80’s. Further up you start to see ornate tiles, fireplaces, corbels off buildings and lots of broken pottery.

There is a lot of newer plastic waste that’s either eroded or been washed up. I only got about a quarter of mile down the two mile stretch as there’s so much to look at.

Despite the initial views and the sun being out, the further you walk up the quieter it gets. The more you see you know that these bits of brick, old ceramic fuses and sash window weights where once part of a persons life. In a different time. I think the amount of lino flooring makes it seem more real about where you are and what the rubble is, but that’s just me.

You can read a much more eloquent piece about the beach HERE.
