Neolithic- The Sanctuary- Overton Hill- Ridgeway- Wiltshire.

After a tawdry half an hour back on the A4 we went to see The Sanctuary and The Ridgeway.

The Ridgeway has always been fascinating to me, part of a long distance prehistoric track that once stretched over 360 miles across England. I just wanted to stand on it.

The Sanctuary was just that. Quiet, full of rabbits and blackthorn blossom. Apart from the road noise it was beautiful and it felt much better than Avebury.

Across the road is Overton Hill. It is the start point of the Ridgeway or the end whichever way you walk it. There are several scheduled archaeological sites including round barrows which the local sheep were stood upon.

I loved standing on just that tiny bit of path. I wanted to walk further but it will have to be for another day.

I thought a lot about a walk that John Rogers took along the Ridgeway to Pitstone Hill & Ivinghoe Beacon when I was there. I can at least say I have seen and stood at the other end.
